At Odyssey Airways, no two days look the same—especially for our pilots. For Captain Ryan Gucwa, a typical day can begin under the quiet pre-dawn skies of Tampa and end high above the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. From island escapes to mountain retreats, private aviation offers variety, flexibility, and the chance to connect people to the moments that matter.
6:00 AM – Pre-Flight Checks in Tampa
Captain Gucwa starts his morning at the Odyssey hangar in Tampa. Today’s first trip: a short flight to the Bahamas for a honeymooning couple. He begins with a thorough review of the weather, flight plan, and fuel levels, then inspects the Citation CJ aircraft from nose to tail. Attention to detail is essential—and it’s what sets the tone for a seamless passenger experience.
8:00 AM – Bound for the Bahamas
With the sun rising, the aircraft takes off under clear skies. Onboard, the couple relaxes with mimosas in hand and views of the ocean unfolding below. No lines, no layovers—just a quiet, uninterrupted start to their special trip. By 9:45 AM, the wheels touch down on a Bahamian runway, and a waiting private car takes them to their villa.
10:00 AM – Repositioning to Miami
Once the passengers are dropped off, Captain Gucwa flies the aircraft empty to Miami. These "empty leg" repositioning flights are an efficient way to keep the aircraft ready for the next client. It’s also a moment of calm for the pilot, flying solo over the turquoise waters of the Atlantic.
1:30 PM – Off to the Mountains
At Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, a family of four boards the jet for a summer trip to Banner Elk, North Carolina. Known for its scenic trails, cozy cabins, and cool mountain air, it’s the perfect place to unplug. As the flight climbs, the parents unwind with refreshments while the kids watch clouds drift by from the window.
4:45 PM – Arrival in the Blue Ridge
The approach into Banner Elk is picture-perfect. Rolling hills and mountain peaks greet the jet as it descends toward a quiet regional airstrip. A private SUV is waiting to take the family to their rental home near Grandfather Mountain—just minutes from hiking trails, rivers, and local shops.
6:00 PM – Final Leg to Tampa
With passengers dropped off, Captain Gucwa starts his final flight of the day: back to Tampa. As the sun sets over the Appalachians, he enjoys a peaceful moment in the cockpit. Upon landing, he wraps up the day with a post-flight inspection, logs his flight data, and coordinates with the Odyssey ground team to prep the jet for its next journey.
Flying the Odyssey Way
For our pilots, every day is a mix of precision and service—whether it’s a honeymoon flight, a family adventure, or a simple reposition. Captain Gucwa’s day is one example of how private aviation is more than just getting from point A to B—it’s about making each flight feel effortless, safe, and personal. And tomorrow? A new crew, a new flight plan, and another chance to deliver the Odyssey experience.
